Fibertel Communications:
Privacy Policy

As of January 1, 2004, under the requirements of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), any commercial organization that collects and maintains information about its customers must adhere to federal privacy legislation. This essentially gives you — as the customer — the right to know about and restrict the use of any personal data that we have in our possession.

With very few exceptions, the customer data collected by Fibertel Communications is used solely to support the processing and delivery of the products and services requested by the customer. We do not ask for any data for which we do not have a specific use. All data that is collected is maintained in as secure a manner as possible and we never pass on any customer "lists" to third party entities.

The following describes what information we have and how we use it.

Client Database Data

Obviously, Fibertel maintains a database of present and past customers in order to conduct business. When you call us to request a quote, we collect (at a minimum) your business name, address, phone/fax and contact person name. If the quote is not accepted, we do not retain your data beyond the creation of the original quote document. However, if the quote leads to a billable service call, your information is entered into Fibertel's database and is retained for possible future use. Over time, each customer's "file" will contain a history of all service calls and related invoicing details. This data is intended for work order and accounting purposes only. (In support of the latter, all accounting related data is made available to Fibertel's accountants on a yearly basis.)

Note: We do not collect any banking-related data from our customers.

Delinquent Accounts

With one important exception, the customer data in our database is not shared with any external parties. If a customer does not pay an outstanding invoice after a reasonable period and after a written warning of impending legal action, Fibertel reserves the right to send the file to a collection agency and/or our lawyers.

Sharing Business Leads

As a business, we value the benefits of networking and sharing leads among business acquaintances. If we have done work for you and know you as a competent member of industry "XYZ", we may recommend you to our associates should we hear about a need for your services. (This usually involves the sharing of "business card" data: name, phone, address, etc. Under the Act, this is not considered to be private information that needs to be protected.)

Current/Past Jobs

On our website, we highlight some of our current and past jobs for reference purposes. Clients are identified by company name and the listing classified as to whether the work was cabling or telephone related. No other information is supplied and we explicitly state that we should be contacted first for details regarding any job. If a request is made to speak with a customer directly, we will be in touch with that customer first to establish whether such contact should be made. If you currently appear on this list and want to be removed, please contact us and we will do so immediately. (On the other hand, if your company name appears on this list and you wish to have it turned into a link to your website, feel free to make that request also.)

Subcontractor Data

Companies engaged to perform work on contracts procured by Fibertel Communications are often required to provide proof of basic liability insurance and current WCB coverage. This information is requested by our own insurance company on a yearly basis or, on a job by job basis, by the client for whom the work is being performed. In both cases, Fibertel is obligated to collect and provide this information.

Email Addresses

People and organizations who contact us by email can be assured that — unless a specific request was made to us to forward information to a third party — no email addresses are given to, sold to, or otherwise shared with anyone outside of Fibertel Communications. In the event that a request is made of us to forward an email, Fibertel Communications assumes no responsibility for what happens to the email or its contents once it arrives at the requested destination.

The single exception to the above is in the event of continued "spamming" despite repeated requests to cease and desist. In this case, your email address may be forwarded to appropriate organizations for blacklisting purposes.

Resume Information

Individuals submitting resumes and job application letters to us can be assured that we destroy all documentation after a certain time period (six months to one year, depending on volume). Physical paper documents are shredded before being disposed.
